'I came back in a 3-piece suit': Boss insists employee comply with dress code, forcing him to go home and change out of his jeans, employee takes his sweet time during the trip

Most workplaces have a dress code, and most of the time, it makes sense to expect your workers to dress a certain way, especially if they work in the service industry and have to see customers every day.

But if a workplace never really ensures the employees dress according to the dress code, whose really to blame when employees come dressed however they like?

The employee in the story below worked at a store where the dress code prohibited workers from wearing jeans to work, but no one ever really enforced this rule. That was at least until the day the district manager visited the store. When he saw that this employee was wearing jeans, he insisted that the employee go back home and change, even though it meant he would be left alone in the store for at least an hour.

When the employee realized there was no getting through to the manager, he decided to comply with the demand in the best way possible – overcorrecting. Keep scrolling to understand what we mean by that.

    When I was in college I worked for a large video rental company in the US northeast as an assistant manager of a store that staffed 7 people.

Not sure it was truly "petty revenge" (maybe would be more-so if you had gotten him fired for "pants- based harassment" or something ridiculous like that) but I admire your spunk and appreciate the laugh provided as I imagined your district manager's half-annoyed, half-amused eye roll. Sometimes rules are stupid and it takes stretching them to the extreme to show the fullness of their stupidity.
